So often when we talk or think about the unnecessary use of glyphosate for weed control in our communities we have concerns about our health , families health ,pets , friends and neighbours and surrounding biodiversity
Let’s consider and take time to think about the council workers , the people often forgotten about , who have been employed to apply these chemicals as part of their jobs.
Not the councillors , MPs & committees sitting in suits behind desks having endless discussions -But the council operatives
When concerned Balerno residents first called Edinburgh council in 2017 , we spoke with council operatives in passing
They told us , USA lawsuits are just rumours , It dries in / washes away
, We do not wear protective clothing as it may frighten the public and it Doesn’t affect me anyway…
Effects of Glyphosate are not always immediate and toxic effects can accumulate over time for those directly & those indirectly involved .
Council operatives exposed to glyphosate over an extended period of time applying it hour after hour around our cities , inhale it & can absorb it through the course of their jobs .
Some Family members may also be affected by indirect exposure. Residues of chemicals via work clothes taken indoors to be washed or walked in via work boots could mean more vulnerable family members, children and pets could suffer too.
That’s why Pesticide Free Balerno continue to work with Edinburgh Council to implement using Safe Alternatives like Foamstream or Hot water systems.
Safe alternatives are safe to use around animals and humans , do not require harmful chemical hazard training or protective gear like glyphosate does
Pesticide Free Balerno is not only for us the Balerno community , but for the Edinburgh Council workers who serve the community
We want the weeds removed but not at the expense of our or another persons health !
